Application for Future Inquiry

Now that I have learned about the Discourse Community I will enter once I am studying for my Radio, Television, and Film degree at the University of Texas at Austin, I am curious to see how the new writing principles and conventions I have learned will be integrated into the course work. I believe this class has helped me grow stronger with analyzing passages, and I think this will be beneficial to my studying next year, because I am now better at analyzing pieces for purpose, tone, and theme. This will be a proper skill to have especially when I am in film specific classes where I must identify these types of devices.

 I also believe that this class helped me learn how to pace myself when it comes to writing. The process of writing essays in smaller parts called “Building Blocks” helped me take my time and focus on answering each question in the prompt. Doing this made constructing a final Learning Unit draft so much easier because I had all of my ideas written out for the prompt, and I just had to work on making sure the passage had a coherent message that answered the prompt with immense detail. This aspect of the writing process will be helpful within my major when I take screenwriting classes. I will be able to take a story, and work on it piece by piece until it flows as one script that works well together. 

I am excited to take English 1302 with Dr. Rowntree next semester. I believe my writing will improve even more, because I will be instructed with more detail on how to  tackle the writing process. Continuing taking English courses will help my writing skills grow, which will help me do work within my major, and help me succeed in more of my classes in college. Taking English Composition classes is so beneficial to students no matter what major they are pursuing because this course pushes students to think critically to answer questions, and find solutions to problems.
